Danubius Umbratilis: un doppio sogno nel letto del Danubio.
Hanno la parvenza di un sogno, anzi, di un doppio sogno: una visione speculare fatta di acqueforti, vernici molli, acquetinte lavis e colorazioni a mano che fissa su grandi lastre di zinco l’affiorare di suggestioni latenti, intricate e umbratili.
Immagini che nascono sul limes danubiano tra l’urgenza della storia e brani di memoria sepolta, tra le rovine di Petronell-Carnuntum e il Mittelbewusstsein, quel territorio di mezzo fluttuante tra conscio e inconscio che gli artisti sanno bene esplorare: da un lato l’impero romano, dall’altro i barbari, da un lato la pacatezza di un fregio di foglie, un frammento di cultura pittorica parietale romana, ultimo baluardo di “civiltà” sul Danubio; dall’altro l’irruenza di una vegetazione rigogliosa e ingovernabile, la bellezza del dialogo necessario e ineluttabile.
Sono le fantasie scaturite dalla sensibilità di Sergio Pausig e Gian Carlo Venuto, opere che riflettono su se stesse nel fluire del Danubio quasi a simboleggiare un tentativo di autosufficienza che la storia negherà ma che al contempo si specchiano nuovamente per interrogarci sul senso di un confine, sull’innocenza geografica di un fiume o sulla follia dei valli e dei muri oggi più che mai attuale, adesso, come siamo, stretti in un’altra strozzatura di forra.
Quesiti suggeriti che riguardano anche la nostra capacità di “considerarci pari ad ogni altro uomo sulla terra, anzi semplice creatura dell’universo, intessuta del perenne fluire e tramutarsi di tutte le cose e pronto ad accettare la propria parabola senza assumere l’aria accigliata”, nelle parole magistrali di Claudio Magris a proposito dell’imperatore romano Marco Aurelio, che a Carnuntum, ha scritto il secondo libro dei suoi Colloqui, più di 1800 anni fa.
Carnuntum come punto d’incontro e il manifestarsi di testimonianze latenti ma ancora fertili.
Il progetto Danubius Umbratilis nasce, infatti, da un viaggio nei luoghi dell’immaginario di Sergio Pausig e da una sosta in una cittadina della bassa Austria che è stata fortezza legionaria e che oggi racconta del suo passato grazie a un importante parco archeologico.
Esplorazione vagabonda che a sua volta si raddoppia, sia nel lavoro gemello dei due artisti sia nei rimandi e nell’indagine delle reminiscenze ispirata da un altro “viaggio sentimentale dalle sorgenti del grande fiume fino al Mar Nero”: Danubio di Claudio Magris, le cui magnifiche parole fanno da sponda e viatico al lavoro ondivago, sottilmente onirico e proprio per questo sapiente, dei due pennelli.
Disegni, dipinti e stampe calcografiche di grandi dimensioni che concentrano in un insight, uno e bino, 2860 chilometri di fiume e qualche millennio di storia sui quali appoggiare uno sguardo attento e stupito.

“Danubius Umbratilis”
Artistic and poetic project by Sergio Pausig and Gian Carlo Venuto
inspired by the book "Danube" by Claudio Magris.
Danubius Umbratilis: a double dream in the Danube’s bed.
They have the semblance of a dream, in fact, of a double dream: a specular vision made of soft paint and hand laying colors fixing on large sheets of zinc the emergence of latent
impressions, intricate and shadowy.
Images that are born on the Danube’s edge (limes), between the urgency of history and songs of buried memory, in the ruins of Petronell-Carnuntum and Mittelbewusstsein: a territory in the
middle, fluctuating between conscious and unconscious that artists knows how to explore: on one side, the Roman empire, on the other the barbarians, on the one hand, the calm of a frieze of
leaves, on the other hand, the vehemence of luxuriant and ungovernable greenery, the beauty of the necessary and inevitable dialogue.
They are the fantasies arising from the sensitivity of Sergio Pausig and Gian Carlo Venuto, works that reflect on themselves in the flow of the Danube as if to symbolize an attempt to
self-sufficiency that history will deny but, at the same time, they reflect again to wonder about the sense of a boundary, geographical innocence of a river or of the madness of valleys and walls
,today more than ever, now, as we are, close to another bottleneck gorge.
Suggested questions affecting also our ability to “consider ourselves equal to any man on earth, indeed simple creature in the universe, woven of the perennial flow and transformation of all
things and ready to accept its dish without taking the frown", as expressed in the masterful words of Claudio Magris about the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, who wrote in Carnuntum the second
book of his Interviews, more than 1800 years ago.
Carnuntum as meeting point and as emergence of latent evidence but still fertile.
The Danubius Umbratilis project was born, in fact, from a trip in the imaginary sites of Sergio Pausig and from a stop in a small town in Lower Austria that was a legionary fortress, today telling about his past thanks to a major archaeological park.
Exploration wandering which in turn doubles both, in the twin work of the two artists and in the investigation of references and reminiscences inspired by another "sentimental journey, from the
great river sources to the Black Sea": Claudio Magris. Danube, whose magnificent words are the bank and encouragement to the wavering, subtly dreamlike and, for this reason, wise, work of
the two brushes.
Drawings, paintings and large intaglio prints that concentrate in an insight, one and bino, 2860 kilometers of river and a few thousand years of history on which supporting a careful and
amazed look.
